These ground peppers are called Aleppo an ingredient commonly used in Turkish Lebanese and Middle Eastern cuisines and are so popular because they offer more complexity than the red pepper flakes found in the grocery store.

The problem is that while you can still buy a spice labeled as Aleppo it may not be what you think it is.
