Baharat is a commonly used spice mix in Middle Eastern cuisine. The word baharat actually means "spice" in Arabic and while the mix can vary from region to region it generally contains some of the same ingredients. Baharat is a popular spice mix for lamb chicken beef and fish as well as soups and rice and contains no salt. The reddish powder has a deep mildly sweet flavor with a hint of smokiness.

Baharat is to Middle Eastern cuisine what garam masala is to Indian food. It is a ubiquitous seasoning that can vary slightly in ingredients depending on where the spice mix is made. All spices are ground to a fine powder and then used in recipes or sprinkled over finished dishes as a flavoring. The paprika nutmeg cumin and cinnamon give the spice mix a rusty hue.
