Taste chili powder

American Tex-Mex style chili powder is a blend of spices often used to make chili con carne or to flavor beans or meats. It is not simply ground chili peppers although confusion may arise with spices with similar names. This ground spice mix is available year-round.

Chili powder is a red-colored blend of ground spices. While it does contain some cayenne pepper for heat it also contains spices such as cumin garlic powder oregano and paprika intended to provide the flavors you expect from chili con carne. The ratio is one part cayenne pepper to seven parts other spices depending on the blend. The spiciness of a particular brand of chili powder varies but is always much lower than that of purely ground chili peppers. Some blends contain salt as well as spices which can be a problem for those who avoid salt.

You will find blends simply labeled as chili powder or chili spice mix suitable for use in making chili con carne. Organic varieties are available. Some chili powders are labeled as hot but are still a spice blend. Darker varieties of chili powder have a smoky and slightly sweet flavor.
