There are two main species of cod: Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) found throughout the cold waters of the North Atlantic Ocean and the smaller Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) found along the Pacific coasts of North America Asia and Russia. Cod belongs to the same family Gadidae as haddock whiting and pollack.
