In the Netherlands hagelslag refers to small pieces of candy that resemble chocolate sprinkles and are used as a topping on buttered bread. This iconic Dutch food is eaten with meals or as a snack and is popular with both children and adults. Hagelslag comes in a variety of flavors and colors with chocolate being the most common. It is popular in the Netherlands Belgium and the former Dutch colonies of Suriname the Netherlands Antilles and Indonesia. The chocolate variety is also called chocoladehagelslag and in Belgium muisjes or muisstrontjes.
Some say that hagelslag was an Amsterdam invention probably created by candy manufacturer BE Dieperink who was the director of the company now called Venz. The story goes that one day in 1919 when it was hailing outside Dieperink came up with the first variety of hagelslag – crunchy anise-flavored grains – and called them "hagelslag" which means "hailstorm" in Dutch. They were a huge commercial success.
