Muenster is an American cow's milk cheese with a mild buttery flavor and a smooth semi-soft texture. Blocks of Muenster are distinguished by their bright orange exterior. Muenster is often sold in blocks or pre-sliced. It is thought to have originally been produced as an imitation of Munster a soft-matured French artisanal cheese.
Muenster is known for its square blocks with a bright orange rind. It is a staple in North American delicatessens and is often used in sandwiches. The cheese was first made in Wisconsin in the 19th century by immigrants from Alsace now part of France but then German territory possibly as an imitation of a washed-rind cheese known as French Munster also called Munster-Géromé.
