What to do in Bali: guide to 10 unique activities and hidden treasures
We discover the 10 best activities in Bali that people don't know about with our local guide and review the New York Times' tips on 36 hours in Bali: are they any good? If you're planning a trip to Bali, you won't want to miss our top 10 unique and underrated activities. As a five-time visitor to Bali, I've put together some insider tips to show you the best of what this magical island has to offer.
First on the list is a hike through Bali's iconic rice fields. The Tegalalang Rice Terraces, located just 15 minutes from Ubud, offer great views and guided tours for a small fee. Do you like beautiful silver jewelry? Then, Celuk village is the perfect place for shopping. With handmade designs ranging from traditional to modern, you won't want to miss out on bargaining for a unique piece at Bara Silver.
For a glimpse of Balinese culture, the traditional temple ceremonies are a must. Ask your hotel or locals for recommendations to attend one of these magical events. If you prefer adventure, whitewater rafting on the Ayang River offers an exciting half- or full-day excursion with stunning views.

Bali is known for its handmade crafts and volcanic pumice sculptures are no exception. Cross the island and admire the skilled work of these artisans or head to the nearby village of Mas to admire traditional wood carvings. Finally, no trip to Bali is complete without a massage. For an affordable option, head to the beach or roadside for a relaxing treatment.
The New York Times travel section is a great source, but we've tried most of their suggestions and found them disappointing. Skip brunch at STARFISH BLOO AT THE W IN SEMINYAK and avoid staying at the Blue Star Hotel in East Bali. However, the KLUNGKUNG WATER PALACE is definitely worth a visit, and scuba diving the Japanese shipwreck near the beach in east Bali is a good idea.

OK, enough of the New York Times: we loved renting a boat with a local fisherman. It's also a fun and affordable way to explore the coast.

I know it sounds weird, but if you're looking for a unique cultural experience, attending a cremation ceremony in Bali is a great way to witness Balinese Hinduism in action. Be sure to hire a local guide for the best experience.

And for a true taste of Balinese culture, spend three days in Ubud. This city is the cultural heart of Bali, attracting travelers and artists for decades. Explore the art galleries, go shopping, put your nails on and eat, eat, eat.
Appreciate.
