Try These Dishes During Your Juneteenth Celebration
Serious Mealtimes / Liz Voltz
On June 17 2021 President Joseph R. Biden Jr. signed a bill to make Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday to commemorate the day on June 19 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston Texas were told they were free by Union soldiers. This was two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
Also known as Freedom Day Emancipation Day and Jubilee Day it is a day of remembrance and reflection. While the way the holiday is celebrated varies from region to region and even from family to family there is one thing that all the barbecues parades rodeos and street fairs held on the day have in common: there is almost certainly food involved.
