Is it better to exercise before or after meals for weight loss and blood sugar control?

If you monitor your blood sugar because you have diabetes or prediabetes you probably know that physical activity is recommended to help keep it under control. You may also be aware of the American College of Sports Medicine’s recommendation regarding physical activity for people with type 2 diabetes which is to include 45 minutes of any type of exercise at any intensity after meals to improve post-meal blood glucose response.

We've previously reported on studies showing that just two minutes of walking after a meal lowers blood sugar levels and that physical activity in the afternoon or evening can control blood sugar levels better than morning exercise.

Some of the information may seem contradictory and confusing. In an effort to refine the exercise prescription for blood sugar control researchers from the University of Rome decided to examine the available research to see if they could develop more refined recommendations.
