Why are English cucumbers wrapped in plastic?

Cucumbers are one of the few foods I keep in my kitchen year-round. As the main ingredient in some of my favorite dishes like fattoush gazpacho and spicy smashed cucumber salad this vegetable (or fruit depending on who you ask) brings a fresh flavor to meals that no other ingredient can match.
There are a few types of cucumbers to choose from at my local grocery store. For snacking I go for the small sweet Persian cucumbers nestled in clusters of five or six on a cardboard tray wrapped in plastic. When pickling I go for Kirby cucumbers the bumpy thick-skinned variety. I find their flavor too strong so I ban them from the snack category.
