Are you a fan of smoked salmon bagels or grilled salmon? If you love cooking and eating salmon and can’t get enough of the pink fish you might want to consider buying your fillets at Costco. Unless you’re buying wild-caught salmon the chain takes steps to remove all the pesky skin as well as bones and extra fat. Costco confirmed to Chowhound that its farmed Atlantic salmon fillets are both boneless and skinless. Meanwhile the retailer sells its wild-caught items without the skin or bone.

The Seafood You Should and Shouldn't Buy at Costco

The lack of bones skin or fat on Costco salmon fillets saves you money when you pay by the pound for your fish. Combine that with the relatively lower prices for salmon at Costco and you’ll end up saving more by buying in bulk. While prices can fluctuate from store to store Costco undercuts many of its competitors by charging around $12.99 per pound for its salmon fillets. Meanwhile comparable salmon fillets elsewhere can cost anywhere from $9 to $30 per pound. In some places farmed fish can go for as much as $35 per pound.

That means you’re getting salmon at the lower end of the cost spectrum at Costco but because the fillets don’t have bones skin or excess fat you’re also getting more for your money since those parts add weight which would ultimately cost you more. You’ll also spend less time preparing your meal.

As the saying goes “time is money” and another benefit of buying salmon at Costco is that home cooks in a hurry don’t have to spend time removing the skin from the salmon or deboning the fillets. Buying in bulk also saves time because you can cut the fish into smaller portions and store them for later. If you’re cooking the salmon during the week you can rinse the fillets pat them dry with a paper towel and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer.
