Sometimes kitchen storage is a gift and a curse. After moving to LA in 2020 I upgraded to a fridge-freezer combo that was at least twice the size of what I had in my tiny NYC studio apartment. I also got a really deep pantry that was taller than I was. And I filled every cupboard and nook and cranny of the fridge and freezer.
After a year and a half of hoarding way too much food I was overwhelmed and realized it was time to take action. In January 2022 I made a New Year’s resolution to get everything I had to cook with under control and started with my freezer. I enlisted a friend to help me clean out everything that was freezer burned or that I thought was old categorized everything found containers that could be stacked on top of each other and put it all back. Then I wrote down everything that was in there on a large piece of paper and taped it to the freezer. It was honestly an eyesore—my fridge isn’t magnetic so it was the only thing on it—so I ended up copying it down as a checklist in the Notes app on my iPhone. My goal was to keep track of what was in the freezer before it was freezer burned. Step one!
